  • SCOPE OF POSITION
    Distribute visitor badges to families, pastors, visitors and other guests, adhering to each patient's visitation plan. Report lost or damaged badges for replacement by Security. Utilize various computer programs to assist families and visitors in locating patients, maintaining required confidentiality at all times. Report computer program or printer problems to appropriate JCMC Information Systems personnel. Implement down time procedures in the event of a computer program malfunction or shut down. Answer phone calls for Advocates when they are assisting other family members, redirect misplaced calls to appropriate department, greet visitors, inform Advocate of new families requiring orientation, record basic family contact information when Advocate is taking care of other families or situations, answer questions families or visitors may have, show visitors where patient rooms are, walk families to other hospital locations as approved and requested, inform Advocate of patients moving in or out of the Unit, provide BOG packets to out-of-town families when requested or assist them in locating area businesses or phone numbers, make copies, help locate families, pick up used linens and take to soiled hold, request wheelchair delivery or pick up and help maintain the waiting room in a clean and efficient manner. Inform Advocate when Environmental Services staff is needed for waiting room clean up. Report problems with fish tanks to appropriate personnel. Assist in keeping Consult Rooms available and clean for physician/family consults. Provide families with information or contact numbers for other hospital departments as needed. Inform Advocate of issues between family members so any problems can be rectified. Provide reading or coloring books and crayons to parents or guardians of small children. Alert Advocate to any unattended children or families requesting children visitation. Check other Advocate phone lines for messages and inform Advocate of any assistance requested in other areas of the hospital. Attempt to resolve issues with families regarding visitation and other issues as they arise. Notify Advocate of any conflicts or issues requiring further assistance. Help maintain open communication lines between Advocates, families, visitors, staff, clergy, volunteers and clericals. Deliver items left behind by families or patients when moved out of the ICU to another Unit in the hospital. Ensure that hand sanitizers in waiting area are refilled as needed. Distribute donated snacks to families and visitors, ensuring snacks are maintained in a sanitary manner. Offer assistance and compassion to hurting families and visitors, requesting Advocate intervention as needed.

    Work closely with ICU Volunteers and assist as needed. Answer phones, take and deliver messages, input information into computer, track visitor badges given to family members, and replenish office supplies as needed. Sanitize phones, computer, printer, desk top, waiting room tables and chairs, and visitor badges.

    Access to patient information may be provided to perform the functions of this position; therefore the ability to maintain confidentiality is a requirement.

  • REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
    This position reports to the Guest Services Manager. Position is ultimately accountable to the AVP, Washington County Operations, Guest Services.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    High school education. Computer experience, typing, and phone skills are required. An even temperament is a must in dealing with all the personalities encountered.

  • MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    The person in this position must be able to maintain an active schedule in very active and congested hospital areas. This position must also be able to handle the psychologically and emotionally stressful atmosphere. Physical demands are greater than moderate. May require walking or standing for long periods of time. Requires close mental, visual, and auditory attention in all aspects of job duties. This position must be able to communicate effectively as needed with families, patients, staff (medical, clerical, etc.), and volunteers, as well as visitors and guests.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    This position works in very active and often congested hospital areas. Contact with visitors, patients, volunteers, employees, professional staff, physicians and clergy. This position must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, nights and weekends. Work areas include moderate to high stress levels due to frequent interactions with family, physicians, staff and other health care providers. The person in this position must be able to maintain composure and professionalism through varied stressful and emotionally difficult situations. Potential for exposure to contagious/infectious diseases is high, as is the potential for experiencing verbal and physical abuse.
