PART ONE: GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
- SCOPE OF POSITION
The Staff RN is responsible and accountable for the care of the assigned patients and directs others to assure Patient-Centered Care which is based on patient needs, values, and choices. The Staff RN is expected to practice autonomously within the scope of professional standards, the rules, and regulations established by the appropriate state's Board of Nursing, and knowledge of policies and procedures within Mountain States Health Alliance. He/she demonstrates skill in developing and guiding collaborative collegial practice that delivers safe competent care based on meticulous application of the nursing process. He/she demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse cultural backgrounds of patients and caregivers. The position involves maintaining current knowledge of evidence based nursing practice and the ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process. He/she actively participates in patient care quality and performance improvement through data collections, aggregation and analysis of relevant key indicators of quality (KIQ's). This commitment to quality results in the development and implementation of action plans to include the monitoring of the effectiveness of improvements (Hold the Gains). The Staff RN serves as a professional role model as a caregiver, mentor, teacher and resource for peers and other providers. He/she demonstrates competency in the care of (circle all that apply): Neonate, Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric patient.

It is vital that an individual in this position be capable of good communication skills. It is of the utmost importance that written communication is legible.
RN can verbalize that the RN is responsible for all of the LPN's patients and therefore must ensure reporting from the LPN happens in a timely, appropriate and complete manner.
- REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
This position is directly responsible to the Charge Nurse/Clinical Leader/Shift Leader/House Supervisor/Director of Department and Director of Nursing. Supervise licensed practical nurses and non-licensed patient care personnel assigned to their area.
The competency and practice of point of care testing is under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Medical Director and/or designee per regulatory rule #1200-6-3-15 Alternate Site Testing, Section (1)(c), 9 of the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board Division of Health Related Boards. This practice is a collaborative process with the Laboratory and Nursing leaderships.
- EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The Staff RN is a graduate of an accredited school of diploma nursing and is currently licensed to practice as a professional nurse in the appropriate state.
Must be able to complete job related competencies as deemed necessary to the performance of the RN role in the nursing department of employment.
CONTINUING EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Plans and conducts a minimum of two hours of job related educational programs. 2. Obtains 12 hours educational credit. 3. Verbalizes understanding of Shared Governance Model and willingly serves on at least one Shared Governance, hospital committee, task force, or project to improve patient care or work area. 4. Identifies relevant patient care and/or nursing practice KIQ's (key indicators of quality). This is achieved by using PDCA methodology and the appropriate data collection, aggregation, analysis and trending in the demonstration of measurable improvement outcomes. 5. Attends 75% of staff meetings and reads 100% of the minutes of the meetings missed.
- MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to handle heavy materials or patients. Physical demands greater than moderate may require knowledge of use of appropriate equipment. Frequent bending, lifting, and pulling require proper use of good body mechanics. Often necessary to stand long periods of time and may spend most of shift on feet. Requires close mental, visual, and auditory attention in all phases of patient care activities. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, staff, physicians and visitors. Must be able to wear a respirator mask.
- WORKING CONDITIONS
On a regular basis, the employee will work in high stress direct patient care areas, specific area to be determined by the Clinical Leader/Shift Leader/Director of Department, Clinical Nurse Specialist, or Senior Primary Nurse. Expected to work in other direct patient care areas as needed, as determined by the Clinical Leader/Shift Leader. Stress levels are high due to frequently dealing with life and death situations, physicians, families, and other healthcare providers. Demands high levels of concentration and the ability to work in emotionally charged situations.
